Juan Soto turned 27 in October, and the 2026 season has been the strangest paradox of his career: he has never hit better, and he has never missed this many games. Through 84 games he is slashing .283/.408/.539 with 21 home runs, 52 RBIs and 63 walks, a .947 OPS that would lead the National League if he had enough plate appearances to qualify. His .408 on-base percentage does lead the NL. His 159 wRC+ is the best in the league. The problem is the calves. Soto landed on the injured list in April with a right calf strain, his first career IL stint. He came back in late May and was electric through June and early July, hitting 10 home runs in 23 games and notching his 27th career multihomer game on July 4 against the Braves, breaking a tie with Jimmie Foxx for the most multihomer games by a player 26 or younger. Then, on July 24 against the Dodgers, he strained his left calf, and he has been out since. On August 14 he ran wind sprints in the outfield at Citi Field without problems and told reporters he will return before the season ends. "It would be great for me and the team," he said. "Finish the season strong and keep the momentum for next year, too."
