The $75 million cornerstone with the rebuilt shoulder
Connor Bedard turned 21 on July 17, and the last twelve months have gone exactly the way a franchise plan is supposed to go, with one violent exception. The 2025-26 season was his best and his most frustrating. He set career highs with 30 goals, 45 assists and 75 points in 69 games, led Chicago in assists, points and game-winning goals, and became the third Blackhawk with a 30-goal season at age 20 or younger, joining Jonathan Toews and Eric Daze. In November he was the NHL's Third Star of the Month, third in the league with 23 points in 14 games. Then, in early December, he hurt his right shoulder on a routine play in St. Louis and missed the next 12 games, the entire month of January. At the time of the injury he was a top-five scorer in the NHL.
He came back and finished the job anyway. Bedard returned after the Olympic break in February and said it was the best hockey he has played, and on April 6 he logged his 200th career point against San Jose, the first Blackhawk in history to reach 200 at age 20 or younger and the 13th player in NHL history to do it. The team around him improved from 25-46-11 to 29-39-14, still 31st in the league, still out of the playoffs for a sixth straight season. The summer was louder. On July 18 he signed a five-year, $75 million extension that runs through 2030-31, the biggest commitment the Blackhawks have made to a player in years. Five days later Patrick Kane came back on a two-year deal, a reunion the front office consulted Bedard on first. And on July 2, before any of that, he tumbled into the boards at an on-ice workout in Vancouver and damaged his left shoulder, requiring surgery in early July and a four-month recovery that pushes his 2026-27 debut to November.
