NBA vs. NFL vs. Premier League: The Definitive Sports Jersey Sizing & Performance Guide (2026 Edition)

The same letter means completely different things in the NBA, NFL, and Premier League. Here's the cross-league sizing and tier guide we wish every customer read before checkout.

Every season, we get the same email — and it usually starts with the same confession: "I bought a Large in an NBA jersey and a Large in a Premier League kit and one of them is a tent and the other is a crop top." That's not a sizing mistake. It's a league mistake. The NBA, NFL, and European football worlds all use the same letter system and mean completely different things by it.

This guide is the version of that conversation we wish we could have with every customer before checkout: how each league cuts its jerseys, what the tiers actually cost in fit and fabric, and how to buy across sports without guessing.

First, the tier map — every league has its own names for the same idea

The good news: behind the different brand names, every league splits its jerseys into the same two worlds — fan versions (what you wear to the game) and player/Authentic versions (what the athletes wear). The bad news: none of them call it the same thing.

LeagueFan versionPlayer versionWhat changes
NBASwingmanAuthenticStitched twill vs. heat-sealed, lighter mesh, tailored cut
NFLGame / LimitedAuthenticGame = screen-printed; Limited = stitched; Authentic = on-field spec
NHLPremium / FanAuthenticPremium = fan cut; Authentic = pro cut with heavier fight strap
Premier LeagueReplica / StadiumAuthentic / VaporReplica = looser, heat-pressed; Authentic = skin-tight, ventilated

Note: "Limited" in the NFL world is the sweet spot — stitched letters and numbers at a fraction of Authentic pricing. We break the whole NFL ladder down in our Game vs. Limited vs. Authentic comparison.

Why a "Large" isn't a Large — the real sizing rules by league

NBA: cut loose, cut long

NBA jerseys are the most forgiving of the three. The body is cut wide through the chest and long through the hem, because on the court the jersey has to move with a 6'8" frame — and off the court it's meant to fit like a relaxed tee. A Medium Swingman on a 5'10" person with a 40" chest fits like a comfortable casual shirt. If you want a sharper look, size down.

NFL: tailored, with real shoulders

NFL jerseys are built around shoulder pads, which means the shoulder seams sit wide and the body tapers in. The result: a fitted look through the torso with a proper drop-shoulder. NFL sizes run closer to true than NBA — if you're a Large in a regular tee, a Large Game jersey is a safe bet, and you can layer a hoodie underneath without it ballooning.

NHL: long in the body, generous in the arms

Hockey jerseys have the longest hem of any league — they're designed to stay tucked or hang over gear, and the sleeves run long on purpose. They also fit generously overall. If you wear a Large in a tee and want the classic hockey look, a Large NHL jersey will feel roomy — which, honestly, is the look.

Premier League: European slim, size up

Here's the one that ruins everyone's day. European kit makers cut their fan jerseys close to the body — a Medium fits like a US Small, and a Large fits like a US Medium. It's not a defect; it's the European athletic cut. If you're between sizes or you plan to wear it over anything, size up. The Replica (Stadium) cut is more forgiving than the Authentic, which is genuinely skin-tight by design.

Rule of thumb for first-timers: measure your chest, find your number in inches, then check that league's chart before you look at the letter. The letter is marketing. The inches are real.

The fabric story: what you're actually paying for

Strip away the brand names and jersey tech comes down to three things: material, construction, and breathability.

  • Nike Dri-FIT / Dri-FIT ADV — the ADV (Advanced) version is the on-court/on-field material, engineered for athletes: lighter, more breathable, more expensive. The standard Dri-FIT in fan versions is the same family, built for durability rather than weight.
  • adidas Primeblue — recycled polyester made from ocean plastic. It's the sustainability story in European football, and it's genuinely good kit — light, quick-drying, and easier on the planet.
  • Heat-sealed vs. stitched — the single biggest visible difference between tiers. Heat-sealed (NBA Swingman, soccer replicas) is pressed on: light, flexible, and perfectly fine for years of wear. Stitched (NFL Limited/Authentic, NHL Authentic, retro pieces) is sewn twill: heavier, more premium, and the construction that survives a decade in a closet and still looks right.

If you want the deep dive on telling real from fake — including how the stitching and jock tags differ between tiers — our jersey authenticity guide walks through the telltale signs, and the 12 red flags article covers the fakes that get the details wrong.

Before you ask — the questions everyone has

Do NBA, NFL, and soccer jerseys all fit the same way in the same size?
No — and this is the trap almost everyone hits. A Large NBA Swingman is cut loose and long, a Large NFL Game jersey is more tailored with longer sleeves, and a Large soccer fan jersey is the slimmest of the three, cut close to the body like a performance tee. Sizes are only comparable within a league, not across them. The chest measurement on the size chart is the only number you should trust.
What's the difference between heat-sealed and stitched names and numbers?
Stitched (twill) means the letters and numbers are sewn on — the standard for Authentic jerseys in the NFL and NHL, and for most retro pieces. Heat-sealed means they're pressed on with adhesive film, which is what you get on NBA Swingman and most soccer replicas. Stitched holds up longer and looks better up close; heat-sealed is lighter and flexible. For everyday wear, both are fine. For a jersey you want to keep for a decade, look for stitched.
Is it worth paying up for an Authentic jersey over a fan version?
Depends on what you're doing with it. If you wear it to games and wash it after every tailgate, the fan version (Swingman, NFL Game, soccer replica) is the smarter buy — it's lighter, cheaper, and nothing about the look changes in the stands. If you're a collector, a hardcore fan, or someone who wants the exact on-field spec — Authentic is the only answer. It's the difference between a poster and the painting.
How do I measure my chest to pick the right jersey size?
Wrap a measuring tape under your armpits, across the fullest part of your chest, and keep it snug but not tight. That number in inches is what size charts are built around. Compare it to the chest measurement on the chart — not to your t-shirt size. A chest of 40-42 inches usually lands at M-L in NBA/NFL, but always check the chart because leagues differ.
Do soccer jerseys run smaller than American sports jerseys?
Yes, generally. European kit makers cut their fan jerseys close to the body — what a US buyer calls 'fitted.' If you're between sizes or prefer a relaxed fit, size up on soccer. American league jerseys (NBA/NFL/NHL) are cut more generously, and a jersey that's a bit roomy is normal — they're meant to go over a t-shirt or hoodie.
Which jersey materials are actually worth caring about?
The short version: modern jerseys are performance mesh, not cotton. Nike's Dri-FIT and Dri-FIT ADV pull sweat away from the skin; adidas's Primeblue is made from recycled ocean plastic. The real performance difference between tiers isn't the fabric name — it's the weight and the breathability of the weave. Authentic tiers use the lightest, most ventilated mesh because they're built for athletes, not tailgates.
How does NBA jersey sizing compare to NFL and Premier League?
NBA Authentic runs a half-size smaller than your normal t-shirt; NBA Swingman fits true. NFL Authentic (Nike) runs small; NFL Swingman fits true. Premier League jerseys run larger than American sports — a medium EPL shirt fits like an American large. Our full size guide has measurements for every league and tier.
Which jersey tier breathes best for hot weather?
Swingman (replica) is the most breathable across all sports — the lighter mesh construction is specifically designed for everyday wear. Authentic jerseys are heavier and built for on-field performance, not for wearing to a beach or a cookout. If you're in a hot climate or wear jerseys to summer games, Swingman is the practical pick.
