College football returns Saturday. The NFL kicks off in 13 days. Hockey and basketball raise banners within a month of each other. Here is every 2026 opener date, in order, and what to order before the rush.
The next sixty days are the most crowded stretch on the sports calendar. Four leagues open their seasons between August 29 and October 20, the MLB pennant races hit their stretch run, and the World Series starts before the NBA has played ten games. If you buy jerseys for more than one sport, this is the one stretch of the year where timing actually matters.

Saturday, August 29: college football is first out of the gate
Week 0 lands this Saturday in Dublin, Ireland, with North Carolina and TCU playing the earliest meaningful game of the season. The first full Saturday follows on September 5, and from there the defending champion Indiana Hoosiers open with a target on their back while Ohio State sits at No. 1 in the preseason AP poll, with Oregon and Georgia right behind.
The 12-team playoff begins December 19, and the national championship game is January 25, 2027 in Las Vegas, which makes this the longest runway of any league on the calendar. It also makes it the easiest one to shop late, but the safest play is still early: campus-bookstore-style stitched jerseys move fast once the season starts and upsets happen.
One buying note we stand behind: wait until Week 2 or 3 on freshman-name jerseys unless the name is already locked into the depth chart. Rosters shuffle, and a Week 1 hero does not always survive October.

Wednesday, September 9: the NFL opens at the champions' house
The NFL does not ease into things. Week 1 begins on a Wednesday night, September 9, with the Patriots visiting the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks at Lumen Field. Final roster cuts and last position battles play out over the next two weeks, and that is exactly the window to make your jersey call.
The Seahawks opener is also the first test of championship gear inventory. Seattle opened last season's title run as the league's best story and closed it with a trophy, which means the navy and action-green faithful will be out in force on September 9.

Tuesday, September 29: two banners, one night
September 29 is the busiest single date on the calendar. In the afternoon of the sports world's attention, the MLB Wild Card Series begins, and that same night the NHL opens its season with the Carolina Hurricanes raising the 2026 Stanley Cup banner against the Florida Panthers, game one of the new 84-game schedule.
Opening Week is historically the best-stocked window for hockey championship gear, but it does not stay full for long. Sizes on the marquee names sell through by the first homestand. And if you are a Panthers fan, there is a certain appeal to wearing the visiting jersey on the night someone else celebrates.

Meanwhile in October baseball
While the fall leagues open, baseball is closing. The regular season ends Sunday, September 27, the Wild Card Series begins two days later, and Game 1 of the World Series is Friday, October 23. If it goes the distance, Game 7 falls on Halloween night.

Tuesday, October 20: the Knicks raise the banner
The last league to start throws the biggest party. NBA Opening Night on October 20 carries three games, headlined by the 76ers visiting MSG to watch the Knicks raise their first championship banner in 53 years, with the Celtics in Detroit and Wembanyama's Spurs hosting Oklahoma City on the undercard.

How to time your orders: the three windows that matter
After running these shops for years, the pattern never changes. There are three honest windows on the calendar:
- Before Labor Day (September 7): NFL opener gear. This is the tightest window, because the opener is midweek and the first Sunday slate follows immediately.
- Mid-September: NHL banner-night championship gear and NBA pre-order sizing. The Knicks title gear and Hurricanes Cup gear are the two items with the shortest fuse.
