Champions League 2026-27 Matchday 1 Viewer's Guide: Six Fixtures to Circle

The 72nd Champions League opens September 8-10 with PSG vs Barcelona confirmed for night one, and five more blockbusters waiting on the August 29 calendar release. The six fixtures to circle, the format in plain English, the four debutants, and the jerseys to be wearing when it starts.

The 72nd Champions League starts Tuesday, September 8, and for once the opening week needs no warm-up act. The draw in Monaco served up a PSG vs Barcelona opener at the Parc des Princes, back-to-back champions against the No. 10 of Lamine Yamal, on night one of the league phase.

UEFA confirms the full match-by-match calendar with kickoff times on Saturday, August 29. When it lands, six fixtures from the draw are already circled in permanent marker, and this guide walks through each one: the storylines, the stakes and the shirt you want to be wearing when the whistle goes.

If you are building your September around European nights, the Champions League 2026/27 hub has the complete fixture map, the countdown and every club-by-club jersey breakdown in one place.

The shape of the season

Thirty-six teams, eight matches each, four home and four away, spread across 20 weeks between September 8 and January 27. The top eight skip February entirely and go straight to the round of 16. Teams ninth to 24th enter a two-legged playoff, and everyone from 25th down is out, with no Europa League consolation this time.

The number that frames the whole season: PSG arrive as the first double defense since Bayern Munich's 2013-14 attempt, and only Real Madrid, from 2016 to 2018, have actually completed a three-peat in the Champions League era. Every one of their eight league-phase matches is now a referendum. Our PSG three-peat watch tracks the gauntlet.

Six fixtures to circle when the calendar drops

1. PSG vs Barcelona, Matchday 1, September 8. The only fixture with a confirmed date, and the one that needs no introduction. The champions, the remontada history, 14 meetings split five wins each and four draws, Luis Enrique against the club that made him, and Yamal's first Paris trip as a world champion in the No. 10 shirt. The full preview with team news is here, and both jerseys are live in the PSG and Barcelona collections.

2. Arsenal vs Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho takes Real Madrid to the Emirates to face the reigning Premier League champions, the club that pushed PSG hardest in last season's final run. Mourinho has faced Mikel Arteta three times as a Premier League rival and won twice, and Vinicius Junior gets his first meeting with the club that spent the summer trying to sign him. The larger Mourinho storyline, including the Inter Milan reunion at the Bernabeu, is in our Mourinho reunion piece.

3. Manchester City vs PSG. The back-to-back champions visit the Etihad in Enzo Maresca's first European campaign in charge. City also drew Napoli at home, which means a reunion with Kevin De Bruyne, and an away trip to Barcelona that lands in fixture No. 5 below. No English side has a harder league-phase draw on paper.

4. Manchester United vs Bayern Munich. Old Trafford's first Champions League night in three years, and the draw gave Michael Carrick's United the grandest possible opening guest. United also travel to Atletico Madrid, and Bayern's own gauntlet includes Arsenal away and Atletico away, arguably the toughest eight-game schedule of anyone in the field.

5. Barcelona vs Manchester City. Rodri faces the club he left in the summer, wearing blaugrana, in the fixture City fans least wanted to see him in. Maresca's City travel to Camp Nou, the same ground where Yamal now wears the No. 10 that Pep Guardiola's Barcelona era made iconic.

6. Inter Milan vs Liverpool. A repeat of last season's league-phase meeting, at the San Siro, with Andoni Iraola's Liverpool also hosting Atletico Madrid in the standout pairing of their schedule. Inter's own headline fixture, Real Madrid's visit with Mourinho returning to the club he led to the 2010 treble, is covered in the reunion piece.

Honorable mention: Atletico Madrid host both Bayern Munich and Manchester United at the Metropolitano, which makes Simeone's home schedule the best value ticket in the competition. The full 36-team fixture list and the draws behind every pairing are in our draw reaction piece.

Four debutants worth knowing

The 2026-27 field includes four first-time Champions League clubs: Como of Italy, backed by one of Europe's most ambitious projects; LASK of Austria; Sabah FK of Azerbaijan; and Viking FK of Norway. Between them they will distribute eight glamour away days to the giants, and somebody's treble bid is going to wobble in Tromso or Baku on a Thursday night in December.

England provides five of the 36: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa, whose reward for winning the Europa League is a schedule featuring both Barcelona away and PSG at home.
