The 72nd Champions League opens September 8-10 with all 18 fixtures now confirmed: Real Madrid vs Inter on night one, Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid and Napoli vs Arsenal on Wednesday, and Old Trafford's European return on Thursday. The fixtures to circle, the format in plain English, the four debutants, and the jerseys to be wearing when it starts.
The 72nd Champions League starts Tuesday, September 8, and the calendar UEFA confirmed on August 29 turned the opening week into a festival: Real Madrid vs Inter at the Bernabeu on night one, Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid and Napoli vs Arsenal on Wednesday, and Manchester United's long-awaited Old Trafford return on Thursday. The marquee matchups the draw promised now have dates, and the blockbusters are booked across the whole league phase.
All 18 fixtures of the opening week are set, from the Bernabeu curtain-raiser to a Thursday night in Munich and Manchester. Six of them earn the circled-in-permanent-marker treatment below, and the four blockbusters the draw teased have their dates too. Here are the storylines, the stakes and the shirt for each one.

The shape of the season
Thirty-six teams, eight matches each, four home and four away, spread across 20 weeks between September 8 and January 27. The top eight skip February entirely and go straight to the round of 16. Teams ninth to 24th enter a two-legged playoff, and everyone from 25th down is out, with no Europa League consolation this time.

Six to circle on opening week
1. Real Madrid vs Inter Milan, Tuesday, Madrid. Night one belongs to the Bernabeu, where Jose Mourinho returns to the club he led to the 2010 treble against the side he managed across two spells. The largest fixture the opening week could produce, and it is first out of the blocks. 2. Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid, Wednesday, Liverpool. Andoni Iraola's Liverpool open against the most awkward away team in Europe, with Simeone's Atletico the kind of opponent that decides whether a title charge starts clean.
3. Napoli vs Arsenal, Wednesday, Naples. The reigning Premier League champions start their European campaign at the Maradona, a direct top-eight collision on night two. Napoli's rebuilt side is precisely the test a club with Arsenal's ambitions wants early.
4. Porto vs Manchester City, Tuesday, Porto. Enzo Maresca's first Champions League match in charge, in the Dragao on night one. The post-Guardiola era at City starts with the hardest possible away day in Pot 2.
5. PSG vs Slovan Bratislava, Wednesday, Paris. The three-peat bid begins at the Parc des Princes. PSG's chase of a third straight title, a feat only Real Madrid have managed in the Champions League era, starts against the competition's most intriguing debutant.
6. Manchester United vs Sabah, Thursday, Manchester. Old Trafford's first Champions League night in three years, against the Azerbaijan debutants who earned their shot through qualifying. Michael Carrick's United make their return to Europe's top table under the lights.

The four matchups the draw served up that the calendar has now dated: Manchester City vs PSG lands on Matchday 2, October 14, at the Etihad, in Maresca's first European season; PSG vs Barcelona follows on Matchday 3, October 20, at the Parc des Princes, the champions against Lamine Yamal's world champions; Arsenal vs Real Madrid brings Mourinho's Madrid to the Emirates on Matchday 6, December 9; and Manchester United vs Bayern Munich revives the 1999 final on Matchday 7, January 20. Four debutants worth knowing
The 2026-27 field includes four first-time Champions League clubs: Como of Italy, backed by one of Europe's most ambitious projects; LASK of Austria; Sabah FK of Azerbaijan; and Viking FK of Norway. Between them they will distribute eight glamour away days to the giants, and somebody's treble bid is going to wobble in Tromso or Baku on a Thursday night in December.
England provides five of the 36: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa, whose reward for winning the Europa League is a schedule featuring both Barcelona away and PSG at home.
