Since the Champions League era began in 1992-93, exactly one club has won three consecutive titles: Real Madrid, between 2016 and 2018. PSG are chasing the fourth three-peat in 70 years of European football. The draw in Monaco on August 27 did PSG no favors. Their eight league-phase opponents: Barcelona at home, Manchester City away, Roma at home, Aston Villa away, Galatasaray at home, Villarreal away, Slovan Bratislava at home and Como away.
Two of those names are the opponents every contender wanted to avoid. Barcelona bring the most dangerous attack in Europe to the Parc des Princes in the opening window. Manchester City, the club PSG beat on the way to their first title in 2025, wait at the Etihad. Sandwiched around them are a European heavyweight in Roma, a Villa side that reached the UEFA Super Cup, and a set of winnable fixtures that make the math simple: win the home games, steal points on the road, and the top eight finish that skips the playoff round is within reach.
Barcelona's own slate is equally unforgiving in reverse, hosting Manchester City and travelling to Paris with Aston Villa, Sporting, Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Como and Sabah around them. The league phase rewards depth: finish 1-8 and you skip the playoff round entirely. PSG's run to three straight would then need four knockout ties, ending June 5, 2027 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid.
The core that has not changed
PSG's two European Cups were not built on a single superstar. They were built on the least glamorous parts of a football team, and the group has stayed together. Willian Pacho and captain Marquinhos anchor a defence that conceded 29 goals in 34 Ligue 1 games last season. Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes give the full-back positions world-class output in both directions.
In midfield, Vitinha, Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz form the best unit in Europe. Vitinha finished third in the 2025 Ballon d'Or vote and was named Man of the Match in the Budapest final; Joao Neves, at 21, is already the metronome of the press; Fabian Ruiz returned from winning the World Cup with Spain. Up front, Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele leads a front line of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue that presses relentlessly and scores in waves. PSG put 45 goals across the 2025-26 Champions League campaign, averaging 2.8 per game, a number only Barcelona's 1999-2000 side has beaten in the competition's history. Bradley Barcola, the club's leading Ligue 1 scorer last season with 11, remains a rotation weapon while his contract situation plays out.
Summer adjustments: selling well, buying smart
The most striking thing about PSG's summer is the balance sheet. The club sits at a positive net position of around 78 million euros, a break from the era that defined its reputation. Randal Kolo Muani joined Juventus in a deal worth around 50 million euros. Lee Kang-in moved to Atletico Madrid for roughly 40 million. Goncalo Ramos departed, and Renato Sanches was told to find a club.
The arrivals were targeted depth rather than headline names: Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco to refresh the front line, Lucas Digne from Aston Villa to cover the left side, goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni from AC Milan, and Ferran Torres from Barcelona, arriving with a World Cup winner's medal from the Spanish summer.
