The first tie of the season
Giants 27, Commanders 27. Neither club scored in the extra period, and the game finished level — the first tie anywhere in the league in 2026. The Giants had come in 3-1 and the Commanders 1-3; they leave it 3-1-1 and 1-3-1.
The Giants outscored Washington 24–15 across the third and fourth quarters, but the Commanders put up 8 in the fourth and the game went to overtime level at 27–27.
Two still perfect, and one that did not play
Minnesota won at New Orleans, Vikings 23, Saints 13, to reach 5-0, and San Francisco won at Seattle, 49ers 32, Seahawks 29, to join them. The Vikings have scored 109 and conceded 64; the 49ers have scored 154 and conceded 93.
Kansas City are unbeaten too, at 4-0, having sat out Week 5 on a bye. The Chiefs have scored 118 points and given up 77 in four games, and they get the Chargers at home in Week 6.
The three clubs at 0-5
Tennessee lost to Houston at home, Texans 26, Titans 3, and have now scored 58 points in five games, the lowest total in the league. Miami lost to Cincinnati, Bengals 31, Dolphins 24, and the Los Angeles Chargers lost to Denver at SoFi Stadium, Broncos 23, Chargers 17.
Tampa Bay were the club that escaped the group. The Buccaneers had lost their first four games, then beat Dallas on Thursday night, Buccaneers 24, Cowboys 16, scoring 17 unanswered points in the third quarter after trailing 7–10 at half-time.
London, and the two 45s
Jacksonville beat Philadelphia 19–17 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium — the international game went to the Jaguars, a fourth win in five games, and left Philadelphia with a third defeat in five.
Two clubs reached 45 points on the same afternoon and neither of them was in a close game. New England put up 17 on Las Vegas, and Detroit scored 45 in Arizona, 24 of them in the second quarter alone.
Monday night: the round’s biggest total
The last game of Week 5 was also the highest-scoring one. Bills 37, Rams 34, at SoFi Stadium, and the 71 points the two clubs produced were more than any other game in the round.
3 of the fifteen games needed overtime, and only one of them ended level — the tie at Washington that opens this recap.
What the round looked like as a whole
Week 5 produced 726 points across fifteen games, an average of 48.4 per game. 9 of the fifteen finished inside a single score and 3 went to overtime.
Road clubs took the round 9-5-1. The middle of the table is where the round really shows its shape: 10 clubs sit at 3-2 after five weeks, and only 7 teams league-wide have a record better than that.

Shirt demand index: Week 5
Built from our own order flow and range depth, not from the league table.
Minnesota and San Francisco. Both are 5-0 after Week 5 road wins, and both sit in the top five of our own order flow for the week — supporters buy the shirt while the record is still clean, not after it stops being clean.
Tampa Bay. A club that had lost four straight one-score games finally won one, and the Buccaneers’ range moves on a result like that rather than on a preview of the next game.
Tennessee, Miami and the Chargers. Supporters of winless clubs tend to buy earlier, not later — the shirt is a statement of loyalty precisely when there is nothing else to point at — and of the three, the Titans have had the quietest week in our own sales.

Our verdict
Week 5 will be remembered for the tie, but the shape of the season is being set at the two ends of the table. Minnesota and San Francisco are 5-0 and Kansas City are 4-0, while Tennessee, Miami and the Chargers are 0-5 and running out of ways to describe it. In between sit 10 clubs at 3-2 — which is what a league with a hard salary cap is supposed to look like in October. The tie is the novelty; the gap between the perfect and the winless is the story.
