The five games to plan your weekend around
San Francisco at Seattle is the round
The 49ers are 4-0 and the Seahawks are 3-1, and they play in the same division, which makes this the only Week 5 game between two clubs with a combined 7-1 record. It is also the round's clearest read on whether San Francisco's start is a schedule artefact or something more: Four wins is four wins, and this is the first opponent they have faced with a winning record.
Two winless clubs, one winner
Houston and Tennessee are both 0-4 and play each other on Sunday. Somebody has to win. It is not a game that decides a season, and it does decide who spends another week being asked about a winless start.
Minnesota's unbeaten start gets a road test
The Vikings are 4-0 and travel to New Orleans, where the Saints are 1-3. Minnesota have won their four games without ever looking like the best team in the league, which is either a warning or the point: they have not needed to be. A fifth win would make them the only 5-0 club in the NFC.
Philadelphia and Jacksonville play the London game
The Eagles are 2-2 and the Jaguars are 3-1, and this is the second international game of the season. Philadelphia have been average to poor in every game so far and are somehow .500; Jacksonville have won three of four. It is the sort of fixture where the travel and the early kick-off flatten the gap between the two records.
Buffalo closes the round in Los Angeles
The Bills lost for the first time in Week 4, 29-26 in New England, and now play the Rams on Monday night. Los Angeles came from 20-10 down with five minutes left to win in Philadelphia, and both clubs are 2-2 or 3-1 with a schedule that gets harder. It is the last game of the round and the one most likely to change how the AFC looks on Tuesday morning.

Shirt demand index: Week 5
Built from our own order flow and range depth ahead of the round.
San Francisco and Minnesota. The 49ers travel to Seattle in the round’s biggest game and the Vikings go to New Orleans; two 4-0 records, two road trips, and the two ranges that move most when a start stays perfect.
Cowboys and Bills. Dallas host the Thursday game, Buffalo close the round on Monday night in Los Angeles. Both are national windows, and both markets buy in October regardless of the standings.
Houston and Tennessee. Two 0-4 clubs play each other on Sunday, so one of them will be 1-4 by the evening. Supporters of both have had a bad month, which is historically when a shirt is cheapest.

Our verdict
Week 5 is the round where the two 4-0 records get tested and the two winless ones get a chance to stop being winless. San Francisco at Seattle is the game that matters most — not because it settles the NFC West in October, but because it is the first time this season that two of the conference's best records meet each other. Minnesota, meanwhile, have been quietly perfect against a soft schedule, and a trip to New Orleans is exactly the sort of fixture that quietly perfect teams lose. Our read on the value side: the round is generous to the road teams, with eight clubs at 3-1 or better playing away from home — Chicago, Las Vegas, Minnesota, Cleveland, the Giants, San Francisco, Baltimore and Buffalo.
