The five games that mattered

Carolina 32, Detroit 26: the best game of the week, and a statement

Carolina's first Sunday night game at Bank of America Stadium in eleven years produced the week's best football. Bryce Young completed 29 of 41 for 329 yards and two touchdowns, Tetairoa McMillan caught 14 of them for 192 yards and both scores, and Chuba Hubbard ran for 122 yards and two more. Detroit kept pace through Jared Goff, who threw for 412 yards, and Jake Bates, who kicked four field goals, but the Lions never led after the second quarter and turned it over on downs at their own 10 with 1:29 left. Carolina go into their bye at 2-2 and top of the NFC South.

New England 29, Buffalo 26: the first loss of the season

Buffalo were 3-0 and at home, and Drake Maye beat them. He led a 97-yard touchdown drive to open the game and a game-winning drive late, and the decisive play was a one-handed catch by Efton Chism III in the end zone. New England then intercepted Josh Allen to close it out. Keon Coleman had six catches for 115 yards for Buffalo, who are now 3-1 and travel to the Rams on Monday night.

Los Angeles Rams 24, Philadelphia 20: five minutes, two touchdowns, 98 yards

Philadelphia led for 55 minutes and lost. The Eagles were 20-10 up inside the last five minutes when the Rams drove 98 yards for a touchdown, forced a punt and scored again, with Kyren Williams finishing it off. Philadelphia were without DeVonta Smith, Lane Johnson, Landon Dickerson, Zack Baun and Dallas Goedert, and lost Saquon Barkley in the first half. Both clubs are 2-2, and only one of them looks like it.

Dallas 34, Houston 30: CeeDee Lamb, 17 catches

The week's biggest shootout was in Houston, where Dallas scored with under a minute left on a 12-yard pass to CeeDee Lamb — who finished with 17 receptions for 189 yards. Dak Prescott threw for 335, Javonte Williams ran for three touchdowns, and Houston led for much of the game before falling to 0-4.

The two results nobody expected, and what they say about depth

Chicago have won two straight without Caleb Williams, beating the Eagles and the Jets by a combined 50-19 with Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent at quarterback. And in New Jersey, the Giants beat Arizona 36-24 on a goal-line stand that ended with Deonte Banks returning an interception 98 yards on the final play of the game. Neither result changes a division, and both say something about how thin the margins are outside the top four or five clubs.

Shirt demand index: after Week 4

Built from our own order flow and range depth the morning after the round closed.

Tier 1
Tier 1 · the two that won big

Panthers and Patriots. Carolina won a prime-time game 32-26 with 329 passing yards and go into their bye at 2-2; New England handed Buffalo a first loss. Both results travel well beyond their own markets.

Tier 2
Tier 2 · steady October trade

Bears, Rams and Cowboys. Chicago are 3-1 with backup quarterbacks, the Rams won in Philadelphia, and Dallas won a 64-point game. Three large fan bases, three ranges that move anyway.

Tier 3
Tier 3 · the value side

Eagles and Texans. Philadelphia are 2-2 and have benched nothing but their own confidence; Houston are 0-4. Both are historically cheap in October, and both have a schedule that could still turn.

Our verdict

Week 4 was the week the road teams and the backups won. Seven of fourteen games went to the visitors, including five of eight in the early window; Chicago won twice without their starting quarterback; and the two best games of the day were a 32-26 shootout in Charlotte and a 34-30 shootout in Houston. The result with the longest shadow is in Philadelphia, where the Eagles have now been average to poor in every game this season and are 2-2 anyway. For a fan deciding what to wear in October, the useful signal is which of the undefeated teams actually looked convincing — and after Sunday, that list is shorter than it was.
