The four series, series by series

Rays 3–0 Yankees: the pitching series that was not close

We called this the best pitching matchup of the round and Tampa Bay made it one-sided. The Rays won 1–0, 5–2 and 4–3, and New York scored five runs in three games. Game 3 turned on Victor Mesa Jr.’s tiebreaking two-run homer off Max Fried in the sixth inning, a game that also produced a fan-interference call, per ESPN’s report. Drew Rasmussen, who had a 1.81 ERA in ten career starts against the Yankees, set the tone in Game 1.

Guardians 3–2 White Sox: the series that changed hands twice

Chicago won both games in Cleveland, 3–0 and 4–3, and led a series nobody expected them to lead. Then the Guardians scored 20 runs across Games 3, 4 and 5 — 9, 9 and 2 — after managing 3 in the first two. Game 5 was a 2–0 shutout, with Gavin Williams striking out 12 of the 21 strikeouts recorded by Cleveland pitchers and José Ramírez hitting a go-ahead home run, per ESPN. It is the only comeback from 0–2 in this round.

Dodgers 3–1 Braves: the seventh inning in Atlanta

Los Angeles took Game 1 by 5–3, lost Game 2 by 3–2, and then won twice in Atlanta, 3–1 and 4–1. The clinching game turned in the seventh: Andy Pages drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single to put the Dodgers ahead, per ESPN. Los Angeles, who have won the last two World Series, needed four games and won the final two on the road.

Brewers 3–1 Padres: a triple, then a catch at the wall

This was the series that looked hardest to call — San Diego had been the best team in baseball through September. Milwaukee won the first two at home by 3–2 and 4–3, lost Game 3 by 4–3, and closed it out 3–1 at Petco Park. Garrett Mitchell tripled and scored the tiebreaking run in the fifth inning, then made a pivotal catch on Manny Machado’s drive to the wall in the eighth, per ESPN. The Brewers now host the NLCS for the second year running.

What our Division Series preview got wrong

On 2 October we previewed all four series. Three of our judgements did not survive the week, and it is worth being specific about which ones, because two of them were the kind of claim that sounds safe until the games start.

ClaimWhat we saidWhat happenedVerdict
Cleveland’s offenceWe wrote that their .696 OPS was the lowest of any team in this postseason. They scored 9, 9 and 2 in the last three games and won the series.Wrong where it mattered
Yankees at RaysWe called it the best pitching matchup of the round.Tampa Bay won 3–0. New York scored five runs in three games.Right series, wrong shape
PadresWe wrote that San Diego had been the best team in baseball for a month.Milwaukee won the series 3–1 and held them to 10 runs.Wrong
Our wild card picksWe went 2-for-4: the Braves and Yankees advanced, the Cubs and Astros did not. Both clubs we correctly picked, Atlanta and New York, are out. New York did not win a game.Right on the round, wrong after it

The championship series

The Guardians travel to Tropicana Field and the Dodgers to American Family Field. Both series are best of seven in the 2-3-2 format, which means two games at the higher seed, three at the lower seed and the last two back at the higher seed — so the clubs that finished first in each league host Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 if they are needed.

Shirt demand index: the championship series

Built from our own order flow and range depth the morning after the division series closed.

Tier 1
Tier 1 · Cleveland

The only club that produced a highlight reel in this round: two nine-run games, then a 2–0 shutout in Game 5 with 21 strikeouts. Comeback narratives move shirts faster than seeding does, and the Guardians are the last club anyone priced for a championship series on 5 October.

Tier 2
Tier 2 · Tampa Bay and Milwaukee

Both finished their series early and both host the first two games of the next round, which is when a club gets its widest audience of the month. Tampa Bay did it with pitching (five runs conceded in three games); Milwaukee did it by winning both home games in a series everyone expected to be close.

Tier 3
Tier 3 · Los Angeles and the four who are out

The Dodgers’ range is the deepest on the site and does not move on October results, which is exactly why it sits here rather than at the top. The value side this week is the four clubs that were eliminated — Yankees, White Sox, Braves and Padres. Their ranges do not turn over with the bracket, so October is when their stock is deepest and their prices are lowest.

Our verdict

The round rewarded the two clubs that could pitch and punished the two that could not hit, and it did it in the same way the wild card round did a week earlier. New York scored five runs in three games; San Diego, the best team in baseball through September, scored ten in four. Against that, Cleveland won a series after losing both home games, which is the one result here that no projection would have handed you on 3 October. The two championship series that follow are a rematch on the National League side — Los Angeles, the two-time defending World Series champions, against a Milwaukee club they swept in last October’s NLCS — and a meeting of the American League’s top two seeds, Tampa Bay and Cleveland. For buyers, the practical point is simpler: four clubs are still playing and four are done, and the ones that are done are the ones whose shirts get cheapest in October.

Which four clubs are left in the 2026 MLB playoffs?
Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Milwaukee and Los Angeles. The Guardians and Rays meet in the ALCS, the Brewers and Dodgers in the NLCS.
Did the Guardians really come back from 0–2?
Yes. Chicago won the first two games in Cleveland, 3–0 and 4–3. The Guardians then won 9–3, 9–5 and 2–0 to take the series 3–2.
Who won the division series between the Rays and the Yankees?
Tampa Bay, in three games. They won 1–0 and 5–2 at Tropicana Field and 4–3 at Yankee Stadium to complete the sweep.
How did the Dodgers and Brewers win their series?
Both won 3–1. Los Angeles beat Atlanta 5–3, lost 3–2, then won twice in Atlanta. Milwaukee beat San Diego 3–2 and 4–3 at home, lost 4–3 in San Diego, and closed it out 3–1.
How many games is a division series?
Best of five, in a 2-2-1 format: two games at the higher seed, two at the lower seed, and a deciding game five back at the higher seed.
How many games is a championship series?
Best of seven, in a 2-3-2 format: two games at the higher seed, three at the lower seed, and the last two back at the higher seed.
Who hosts the ALCS and NLCS?
Tampa Bay hosts the ALCS because they were the No. 1 seed in the American League, and Milwaukee hosts the NLCS as the No. 1 seed in the National League.
When does the NLCS start?
Sunday 11 October at American Family Field, with the Dodgers visiting the Brewers at 8:00 p.m. ET. Game 2 is Monday afternoon.
When does the ALCS start?
Monday 12 October at Tropicana Field, with the Guardians visiting the Rays at 8:00 p.m. ET. The series then moves to Cleveland for Games 3, 4 and 5.
Why do the final two games of a championship series switch back to the higher seed?
It is the 2-3-2 format, which exists so that travel is limited to two trips rather than alternating every game. The trade-off is that the lower seed plays the middle three games at home.
How much time off do the winners get before the championship series?
It depends on the series. Tampa Bay, Milwaukee and Los Angeles all finished on 7 October; Cleveland needed five games and finished on 10 October, so the Guardians have the shortest turnaround of the four.
Can I still buy shirts for the clubs that were eliminated?
Yes. Yankees, White Sox, Braves and Padres ranges stay in stock after elimination, and October is typically when they are priced lowest. Free worldwide shipping over $49.9.
