Our wild-card picks, final

We picked the Braves, Cubs, Yankees and Astros to advance. Two of them are in the division series, two of them are out, and one of the two that are out — Houston — never led a game in their series. That is 2-for-4, and it is worth being clear about which half of it was luck.

The four series, series by series

Yankees at Rays: the best pitching matchup of the round

Tampa Bay have named Drew Rasmussen for Game 1, and the case is obvious: he went 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA, led the league in WHIP and strikeout-to-walk ratio, and has a 1.81 ERA in ten career starts against New York. The individual numbers are worse than that for the Yankees — Aaron Judge is 2-for-16 with eight strikeouts against him, Anthony Volpe is 0-for-11, Ben Rice is 1-for-16. New York have not named a starter: it is Gerrit Cole or Carlos Rodón. Cam Schlittler, who posted a 1.95 ERA and shut Boston out in Game 1, is lined up for Games 2 and 5, and Max Fried for Game 3. The Rays were 55-26 at Tropicana Field this season and the Yankees 46-34 at home, but Tampa Bay went just 2-4 in the Bronx during the regular season. These two clubs have met in the postseason once, in 2020, at a neutral site.

White Sox at Guardians: the first time these two have ever met in October

Chicago and Cleveland have never played each other in the postseason, and the regular season could not have separated them much less: one win between them, and the White Sox took the season series 7-6. The Guardians' problem is the offence — their .696 OPS is the lowest of any team in this postseason. Chicago, two years removed from consecutive 100-loss seasons, are the ones arriving with momentum.

Braves at Dodgers: a fifth meeting, and a rest advantage

Los Angeles are chasing a third straight title and have not played since the regular season ended. Atlanta won a three-game series against Philadelphia in which Chris Sale started twice, which may keep him out of the early part of this one. The two clubs have met four times in the postseason: the Dodgers won in 2013, 2018 and 2020, and Atlanta won the 2021 NLCS.

Padres at Brewers: the hottest team against the best record

San Diego have been the best team in baseball for a month, and they took the Cubs apart in two games: Michael King carried a no-hitter into the seventh in Game 1, and the bullpen threw 5 2/3 shutout innings in Game 2. Milwaukee won the NL Central again and scored the second-most runs in the majors, despite ranking second-to-last in home runs. Jacob Misiorowski, their ace, is the likely National League Cy Young winner.

Shirt demand index: the division series

Built from our own order flow and range depth the day after the wild card round closed.

Tier 1
Tier 1 · the four who advanced

Yankees, Padres, Braves and White Sox. Every club that survived the wild card round gets a measurable lift the week the next round opens — and two of these four did it by sweep, which is the better half of that lift.

Tier 2
Tier 2 · the rested favourites

Rays, Dodgers, Brewers and Guardians. A bye week means no fresh highlight reel, so the demand here tracks the fixture list rather than a result — the four Game 1s on Saturday are the trigger.

Tier 3
Tier 3 · the value side

A note on the four clubs that went out: Red Sox, Astros, Phillies and Cubs. Their ranges do not turn over with the bracket, so October is when their stock is deepest and their prices are lowest. If that is who you support, this is the month.

Our verdict

The wild card round rewarded the two clubs that could pitch and punished the two that could not hit. Boston scored twice in two games; Houston never led. That is the useful lesson going into the division series, where every remaining series is best-of-five and the rotation depth matters more than it did in a two-game sprint. Our own record was 2-for-4, and the two we missed on were both swept — which is a reminder that in a three-game format, the difference between a pick and a miss is usually one starting pitcher. For the four series starting Saturday, the two where the pitching gap looks widest are these: Tampa Bay's Game 1 starter has a 1.81 ERA against New York, and Milwaukee's likely Cy Young winner has not pitched since the regular season ended.

Who is left in the 2026 MLB playoffs?
Eight clubs: the Rays, Guardians, Dodgers and Brewers, who had byes, and the Yankees, White Sox, Braves and Padres, who came through the wild card round.
When does the division series start?
Saturday 3 October, with four Game 1s. The last one, Padres at Brewers, starts at 8:30 p.m. ET.
How many games is a division series?
Best of five, in a 2-2-1 format: the first two games at the higher seed, then two at the lower seed, then a decider back at the higher seed if it is needed.
Who starts Game 1 for the Yankees?
New York have not announced it. It is Gerrit Cole or Carlos Rodón. Cole was 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts against Tampa Bay this season.
Who starts Game 1 for the Rays?
Drew Rasmussen, who went 16-5 with a 2.67 ERA and led the majors in WHIP and strikeout-to-walk ratio.
How did the Rays do against the Yankees this season?
They won the season series 7-6, and went 55-26 at Tropicana Field.
How did our wild card predictions do?
Two out of four. We had the Braves and Yankees advancing, which was right, and the Cubs and Astros, which was wrong on both counts.
Have the Yankees and Rays met in the playoffs before?
Once, in the 2020 ALDS, at a neutral site in San Diego. Tampa Bay won it on a late home run.
When would a deciding Game 5 be played?
Friday 9 October for both National League series. The American League deciders, if needed, would be Thursday 8 October.
Where can I buy division series shirts?
All eight clubs still playing are in stock in fan and player editions, with names printed to order. Free worldwide shipping over $49.9.
What is the difference between the wild card round and the division series?
The wild card round is best-of-three with every game at the higher seed. The division series is best-of-five and both clubs host games.
