Only one Game 1 starter has been named

Atlanta have said it plainly: Chris Sale starts Game 1. Philadelphia have not, and the reason is arithmetic — Zack Wheeler had to pitch the final game of the regular season to get the Phillies into the postseason at all, so he will not be on full rest at any point in this series. The Phillies' options are a rookie on normal rest, a left-hander who had thrown one inning since 7 September, and a veteran who made a start on short rest on Saturday.

  • Chris Sale starts Game 1 for Atlanta — his first postseason appearance since 2021.
  • Sale's regular-season ERA was 2.16, third in the majors.
  • Against Philadelphia he was better: a 2.08 ERA in four starts, 26 innings.
  • He has held Bryce Harper to 2-for-21 and Kyle Schwarber to 2-for-25.
  • Philadelphia have not named a starter. Wheeler pitched six innings in Game 162.
  • Jesús Luzardo's relief inning on Sunday was his first outing since 7 September.
  • Phillies relievers have a 5.79 ERA since 1 September — last in the majors.

What decides each series

Phillies at Braves

Atlanta won nine of the thirteen meetings this season, and Chris Sale has been the single biggest reason the Braves are here at all. The counterweight is history: Philadelphia eliminated Atlanta in the division series in both 2022 and 2023, and this is a best-of-three with no days off, where a bullpen matters more than a rotation. That is where Philadelphia's problem sits — a 5.79 relief ERA since 1 September, worst in baseball.

White Sox at Astros

Houston won the West at 81-81 and hosts a Chicago team that finished one game behind Cleveland in the Central — two clubs just three games apart in the standings. Neither side has named a Game 1 starter. In a best-of-three the higher seed hosts every game, so Houston's .500 record buys it three home games and nothing else.

Red Sox at Yankees

The two best records in the round that do not come with a bye: New York at 93-68 and Boston at 87-75. Every game is in the Bronx, and the home-and-road split is close — the Yankees were 47-34 at home this season, Boston 41-39 on the road.

Cubs at Padres

Chicago won the season series 5-1, including a sweep at Wrigley Field from 29 June to 1 July and a 23-3 win in the final meeting. They also lead the majors in OPS (.765) and the National League in home runs (218). San Diego's answer is the back of its bullpen, and a rematch of last year's wild-card series that the Cubs took in three games.

Shirt demand index: wild-card edition

Built from our own order flow and range depth, not from a poll.

Tier 1
Tier 1 · biggest markets, shortest series

Yankees and Braves. Both host, both have the largest fan bases in the round, and a best-of-three can end a season in two nights — which is exactly when a shirt gets bought.

Tier 2
Tier 2 · steady playoff trade

Cubs, Padres and Phillies. Three clubs whose playoff runs have sold consistently in recent Octobers, and Chicago's is the one with the loudest supporting numbers.

Tier 3
Tier 3 · the value side

Astros, Red Sox and White Sox. A .500 division winner, a road team with a winning record, and the club that needed the final weekend — the three most interesting prices in the round.

Our verdict

The round is short enough that one starter decides a series, and only one club has actually named one: Atlanta, with Chris Sale, whose 2.08 ERA in 26 innings against Philadelphia is the single most useful number in this round. Philadelphia's counterweight is a bullpen running a 5.79 ERA since 1 September, which is not a small-sample problem in a best-of-three. Our picks: Atlanta, Chicago, New York and Houston to advance — with the Cubs' 5-1 season series against San Diego the least likely of the four to be repeated.

Who won the season series between the Cubs and the Padres?
Chicago, 5-1. The Cubs took two of three at Petco Park in late April, swept a three-game set at Wrigley Field from 29 June to 1 July, and won the last meeting 23-3.
