Thank You, Leo: Messi Retires from Argentina, and the Jerseys That Tell the Story

Lionel Messi has retired from the Argentina national team. We trace the arc of his 207-cap, 125-goal albiceleste career from the 2006 debut to the August 31 farewell letter, break down the records he leaves behind, and pick the Argentina, Inter Miami and Barcelona shirts that tell the story of the number 10.

Late on August 31, 2026, Lionel Messi closed the most decorated international career in football history. In a handwritten letter posted on social media, the 39-year-old announced his retirement from the Argentina national team: 207 caps, 125 goals, 68 assists, three World Cup finals, one World Cup, two Copa Americas and an Olympic gold. This is our tribute to the albiceleste era, the story of how it ended, and the jerseys that carry the memory of the number 10.

The decision did not come out of nowhere. Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final 0-1 to Spain in New Jersey on July 19, a second consecutive final defeat after the Qatar triumph. Six weeks later, after the death of his father Jorge on August 8, Messi wrote the letter he had been carrying since the final. In it he thanked his teammates, the coaching staff and the fans, and made clear that the decision was his alone: the shirt now belongs to the next generation.

Every Messi shirt, from the 2006 retro 19 to the current 3-star 10, is gathered in our Lionel Messi jersey hub, and the full range of blue and white editions lives in the Argentina collection. What follows is the arc of a farewell.

The arc of the albiceleste era

2005 - The debut

Messi makes his Argentina debut as a 19-year-old, wearing the number 19 he would keep for the 2006 World Cup. The boy from Rosario is already being called the heir to Maradona.

2008 - Olympic gold

Messi captains Argentina to Olympic gold in Beijing, his first senior international trophy, alongside Di Maria and Aguero.

2014 - The Maracana heartbreak

Argentina reach the World Cup final in Brazil and lose 0-1 to Germany in extra time. Messi wins the Golden Ball, but the medal he wanted was gold.

2016 - The brief goodbye

After a third straight final defeat in three years, Messi announces he is leaving the national team. Argentina responds with a public outpouring, and he returns within weeks.

2021 - Maracana redemption

Thirteen years after that 2014 night, Messi finally lifts a senior trophy for Argentina, beating Brazil 1-0 in the Copa America final at the Maracana.

2022 - Qatar

The crowning moment. Messi scores twice in one of the greatest World Cup finals ever played, Argentina beating France on penalties, and the number 10 finally holds the trophy it was born to hold.

2024 - The defense

Argentina retain the Copa America, and the 39-year-old keeps producing: the records for caps, goals and assists now all carry his name.

2026 - The last dance

Six tournaments after his first, Messi plays his final World Cup final, Argentina losing 0-1 to Spain. He finishes as the tournament's record holder for appearances, assists and goal involvements. Six weeks later, the letter arrives.

August 31, 2026 - The farewell

Messi announces his retirement from the Argentina national team in a handwritten letter, thanking the fans of a country that has carried his name for two decades.

The numbers that will not be touched

What the letter said. In his handwritten farewell, Messi wrote that he had given everything he had to the shirt, that the time had come to step aside, and that he leaves with his head held high, grateful to the Argentina fans who carried him through the defeats and the triumphs alike. He closed by asking supporters to carry the team the way they always have, for the players who will wear the number 10 next.

Club football continues: Inter Miami

Retirement from Argentina is not retirement from football. Messi remains an Inter Miami player under contract through the end of 2028, and the pink shirts below are the ones he is wearing right now in MLS.

Every current Messi club shirt is in the Inter Miami CF collection, so the next chapter of his career is already on the shelf.

The legacy pieces: Barcelona and the retro 19

Some shirts are bigger than one season. The Barcelona home shirt connects the number 10 to the club where he became Messi, while the 2006 retro with the 19 takes the collector back to the debut, and the figure is the keepsake that never fades.

The full collection of his shirts across every club and every era is in the Lionel Messi jersey hub, alongside the Barcelona collection and the Spanish clubs collection.

Why this is the moment

Messi's farewell arrives exactly as the 2026/27 club season is finding its shape. The European leagues have opened across the big five, with the storylines set out in our Big Five opening review, and the Champions League begins in early September with PSG chasing a third straight title, covered in our Champions League contenders guide and the PSG three-peat watch. The national team window, though, now belongs to one story, and the shirts of that story are ours to carry.

For a closer look at the 3-star shirt itself, our earlier Argentina 3-Star Messi jersey spotlight walks through the details of the kit he wore into the final.
