How the league phase works in 2026/27
This is the third season of the 36-team single league format. Every club plays eight different opponents — four at home, four away — and the table is one big ladder rather than groups. The top eight go straight to the round of 16; those placed 9th to 24th go into a two-legged play-off. Matchday 1 is the only round where every club is still level on points, which is exactly why the opening night carries more weight than the fixture list suggests.

Matchday 1 results: all 18 scores, and what they mean for the shirt market
The 2026/27 league phase is under way, and after three nights of football the first table of the season has a familiar shape at the top: the holders won big, the Spanish champions won ugly, and both Madrid and Liverpool took maximum points on the nights that carry the most commercial weight.
Tuesday 8 September
AEK Athens 1-0 LASK · Club Brugge 2-3 Aston Villa · Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Villarreal · Porto 0-2 Manchester City · Lille 2-3 Real Betis · Real Madrid 2-1 Inter
Wednesday 9 September
Barcelona 5-1 Feyenoord · Stuttgart 3-1 Viking · Liverpool 2-1 Atletico de Madrid · Paris Saint-Germain 6-1 Slovan Bratislava · Sporting CP 3-1 Galatasaray · Napoli 0-1 Arsenal
Thursday 10 September
Fenerbahce 1-1 Roma · PSV Eindhoven 1-1 Shakhtar Donetsk · Como 4-1 Leipzig · Bayern Munchen 5-0 Bodo/Glimt · Manchester United 4-0 Sabah · Slavia Praha 2-3 Lens
The six talking points. John McGinn scored the first goal of the campaign after 11 minutes as Aston Villa won 3-2 at Club Brugge. Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Inter on a night when Thibaut Courtois made his 100th Champions League appearance, with Federico Valverde named Player of the Match. Erling Haaland's second-half double took him to 59 goals in as many Champions League games as Manchester City won 2-0 at Porto. Ferran Torres scored a hat-trick in his first Champions League outing for holders Paris Saint-Germain in a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava. Arsenal needed one Martin Odegaard strike to win 1-0 at Napoli. And Liverpool came from behind at Anfield, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister overturning Marcos Llorente's opener to beat Atletico de Madrid 2-1.
What it does to the shops. Result weeks are when the market re-sorts itself. Bayern Munich's 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt, Manchester United's 4-0 against Sabah and Como's 4-1 over Leipzig put three clubs straight into the "form shirt" bracket — those are the kits that trend in the 48 hours after a statement win. Ermedin Demirovic's first-half hat-trick for Stuttgart and Raphinha's double for Barcelona do the same for the two sides most likely to be under-bought this season. On the other end, the two 1-1 draws — Fenerbahce v Roma and PSV v Shakhtar Donetsk — are the fixtures where the away shirt usually travels better than the home, and Roma's European following in particular keeps that kit moving regardless of the result.
The four nights that moved the jersey market
Real Madrid v Inter (Tuesday, Bernabeu). The champions of Europe's most decorated competition against the club that has reached two of the last three finals. The Bernabeu on a league-phase opening night is the single biggest shop in European football — and every Real Madrid shirt we stock, from the current home to the full Real Madrid collection, spikes in the 48 hours before kick-off. Result: Real Madrid 2-1 Inter. Mbappe and Valverde scored inside the opening 23 minutes and Carlos Augusto's late reply was not enough — the Bernabeu opener delivered exactly the shirt spike it promised.
Liverpool v Atletico de Madrid (Wednesday, Anfield). Andoni Iraola takes Liverpool into the Champions League for the first time as head coach, against Diego Simeone's fourteenth European campaign. Anfield on a European night remains the most reliable demand spike in English football — and Atletico's red-and-white away has quietly become one of the most-worn visiting shirts in the competition. Result: Liverpool 2-1 Atletico de Madrid. Marcos Llorente put the visitors in front, then Szoboszlai and Mac Allister won it — Iraola's first European night at Anfield ended in three points.
Napoli v Arsenal (Wednesday, Naples). Arsenal open away from home at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, one of the hardest away trips in the draw. Arsenal's away shirt is a year-round seller for us; add a Champions League opener in Italy and the sizing runs tightened by the weekend. Result: Napoli 0-1 Arsenal. Martin Odegaard's 75th-minute strike settled it, and the Arsenal away sold through its European allocation inside the week.
Porto v Manchester City (Tuesday, Estadio do Dragao). City begin away in Portugal, the kind of fixture where the new season's third kit usually makes its competitive debut. Third-kit launches are single-run productions more often than not — when they go, they go. Result: Porto 0-2 Manchester City. Result: Porto 0-2 Manchester City. Haaland's double after the break settled it, and City's third kit got a winning competitive debut in Portugal.
Matchday 1 jersey demand index: where the first rush lands
Every league-phase opener follows the same commercial pattern: shirt demand does not spread evenly across 18 games — it concentrates around a handful of clubs in the first 72 hours. We tiered all six nights-and-fixtures by how quickly the participating shirts historically move once the season starts. This is a demand guide based on our own order flow, not a prediction of results — and now that Matchday 1 is in the books, the tiers have held up: all four Tier 1 fixtures produced a winner, and Bayern Munich's 5-0 plus Manchester United's 4-0 pushed both clubs up the early order flow.
The four fixtures that will sell through first. Real Madrid opening at the Bernabeu is the single biggest shirt night of the round; Liverpool's first European night under Iraola pulls both the home shirt and the away; Arsenal's year-round bestseller gets an Italy away trip; and United's away shirt is the surprise mover of the draw.
Big-club fixtures where demand is steady rather than spiked — City and Bayern shirts move on schedule all season, and Barcelona's new home gets its European debut the night before Liverpool-Atletico.
AEK Athens v LASK, Club Brugge v Aston Villa, Lille v Real Betis, Stuttgart v Viking, Sporting CP v Galatasaray, Fenerbahce v Roma, PSV v Shakhtar Donetsk, Como v Leipzig and Slavia Praha v Lens. Villa and Roma travel in numbers, which keeps their shirts moving; the rest are for the collector who plans early.
