Champions League Matchday 2: all 18 fixtures, kick-off times and what Matchday 1 changed
Eighteen games across Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October 2026, and the first round left marks on half of them: Inter, Atlético and Bodø/Glimt all lost, PSG scored six, and two of the biggest clubs in the competition meet each other at the Etihad.
Quick answers
- Matchday 2 of the 2026/27 Champions League league phase is played on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October 2026.
- 18 matches across the two nights — nine each day.
- Most games kick off at 21:00 CET (20:00 BST); the early slot is 18:45 CET (17:45 BST).
- Atlético de Madrid vs Manchester United, Manchester City vs Paris Saint-Germain and Roma vs Real Madrid are the three fixtures the round is built around.
- Matchday 1 produced statement results: Real Madrid 2–1 Inter, Liverpool 2–1 Atlético, PSG 6–1 Slovan Bratislava and Bayern 5–0 Bodø/Glimt.
- Each team plays eight league-phase matches — four at home, four away — against eight different opponents.
- The top eight go straight to the round of 16; ninth to 24th enter a two-legged play-off in February.
Key takeaways
- Matchday 2 runs across 13 and 14 October, with all 18 league-phase fixtures played over two nights.
- The five fixtures to watch are Atlético de Madrid v Manchester United, Manchester City v PSG, Roma v Real Madrid, Galatasaray v Barcelona and Bodø/Glimt v Borussia Dortmund.
- PSG arrive at Manchester City on maximum confidence after a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava, the widest result of Matchday 1.
- Liverpool's 2-1 win over Atlético means Atlético now need a home result against Manchester United — two defeats would leave a top-eight finish needing a near-perfect run.
- Bayern's 5-0 over Bodø/Glimt is already a goal-difference problem for the Norwegian club, and goal difference is what decides the tight places in this format.
The short answer. Matchday 2 runs across 13–14 October 2026 with 18 matches, and it matters more than a normal second round because the league phase has no return legs: what you take from these eight games is all you get. Three clubs that lost on matchday one — Inter, Atlético de Madrid and Bodø/Glimt — all play at home this time, while Manchester City host Paris Saint-Germain in the headliner of the round.

What Matchday 1 changed
The opening round was not a gentle introduction. Four results set the tone for the clubs now playing catch-up:
| Matchday 1 result | Why it matters on Matchday 2 |
|---|---|
| Real Madrid 2–1 Inter | Inter host Club Brugge needing a win; Madrid go to Rome with a result already banked. |
| Liverpool 2–1 Atlético de Madrid | Atlético now face Manchester United at home — two defeats would leave a top-eight finish needing a near-perfect run. |
| PSG 6–1 Slovan Bratislava | PSG arrive at the Etihad on maximum confidence; Slovan host Stuttgart already needing points. |
| Bayern München 5–0 Bodø/Glimt | Bodø/Glimt’s goal difference is already damaged, which is what decides the tight places in this format. |

That is the structural story of the new format: with eight matches and no groups, one heavy defeat does not end a campaign, but it does follow you. Goal difference separated clubs in the middle of the table all the way into January last season, and a 5–0 or a 6–1 is worth a place.
The five fixtures to watch
Atlético de Madrid vs Manchester United
Tue 13 October, 21:00 CET
Atlético lost their opener 2–1 at Liverpool and now face a United side that has already won at this level. Nobody in the new format can afford to start 0 from 2, so this is the first "must-win" of the league phase.
Manchester City vs Paris Saint-Germain
Wed 14 October, 21:00 CET
The champions against the club that has won the last two editions. PSG opened with a 6–1 win; City are playing their first Champions League season without Pep Guardiola. It is the fixture the whole round is scheduled around.
Roma vs Real Madrid
Wed 14 October, 21:00 CET
Real Madrid won 2–1 against Inter in their opener, and the trip to Rome is exactly the kind of away night the new eight-game format was designed to create.
Galatasaray vs Barcelona
Tue 13 October, 21:00 CET
The loudest away trip on the calendar. Barcelona have to manage a hostile ground and a hostile schedule: this is the first of four matches in fifteen days.
Bodø/Glimt vs Borussia Dortmund
Wed 14 October, 21:00 CET
Bodø/Glimt were beaten 5–0 by Bayern on matchday one and now host Dortmund inside the Arctic Circle. On artificial turf, in October, this is the tie most likely to decide whether the Norwegian champions stay in the top 24.
How the league phase works
Thirty-six clubs, one table, eight matches each against eight different opponents — four at home and four away. There are no groups and no return legs, so every fixture is a one-off.
The top eight at the end of matchday eight go directly to the round of 16. Clubs finishing ninth to 24th play a two-legged knockout play-off in February. The bottom twelve are eliminated. It is a format that rewards consistency over a single big night, which is why a 1–1 away draw is worth more here than it ever was in a four-team group.
