NHL Opening Night 2026: Carolina's Banner, a Five-Game Slate and the Jerseys to Wear

The 2026-27 NHL season opens on Tuesday, September 29 with a five-game night, an ESPN tripleheader and the loudest ceremony on the calendar: the Carolina Hurricanes raising their second Stanley Cup banner before facing the Florida Panthers. It is also the league’s first 84-game season in more than three decades. Here is the full opening-night slate, the key dates that follow, and the jerseys to buy before the puck drops.

Opening-night schedule, start-time changes and camp dates verified against NHL.com and league sources on 21 September 2026.

Opening night, 29 September: five games, an ESPN tripleheader and a banner going up in Raleigh before the first puck.

Opening week: what happens between now and 29 September

Camp is open and the runway is short. Under the new collective bargaining agreement the preseason has been cut to four games and the regular season extended to 84, which leaves the ten teams playing on 29 September roughly a week less prep than they are used to — by the league’s own count, about 12 days from the first practice to puck drop, and only five or six practices once four exhibition dates and two days off are accounted for.

Veterans are feeling it most: players with at least 100 games of NHL experience can appear in only two exhibition games this year, so coaches cannot ease them in the way they once did. The preseason runs through 26 September, with the last full slate on Saturday 26 September — Carolina at Nashville, Tampa Bay at Florida and Calgary at Edmonton among the final tune-ups.

Three start times the league has already changed

The NHL has amended three regular-season start times since the schedule was released, two of them in opening week’s follow-up window:

  • 6 October — Rangers vs Islanders at Madison Square Garden: now 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
  • 6 October — Panthers at Kings: now approximately 10:00 p.m. ET, also on ESPN.
  • 17 February — Oilers at Avalanche: now approximately 9:00 p.m. ET on TNT, truTV and HBO Max.

For anyone buying a jersey for opening week specifically, the practical note is unchanged: stock is deepest now. Ten teams play on 29 September, the first homestand is when championship and new-identity stock moves fastest, and printing queues lengthen once the season is live.

Why opening night 2026 is bigger than usual

The NHL has not opened a season like this in more than three decades. Every team plays 84 games, up from 82, with two extra divisional games each — a 1,344-game slate that the league has built around broadcast windows rather than spread evenly across the week.

That reshaping shows up immediately. Opening night is a five-game event: an ESPN tripleheader in the United States, a Sportsnet doubleheader in Canada, and a defending champion raising a banner in the first period of the season. Carolina’s second Stanley Cup — and their first since 2006 — goes up in the rafters at Lenovo Center before the Panthers, winners of the two Cups before it, skate out. Three straight champions on the same sheet of ice is a season-opener the league could not have scripted better.

The buying logic follows the calendar. Opening week is when championship gear, rookie names and new identities all sit at full availability in every size; by the first homestand, the popular cuts on contending clubs start to thin. The NHL 2026-27 Season Hub tracks all 32 team shops, and the jerseys below are in stock now.

Opening-night slate and key dates as published by the NHL, with start times in US Eastern and Central European conversion. Demand stars reflect how quickly the participating clubs’ jerseys historically move around those dates in our own order flow — not a prediction of results.

Opening-night shirt demand index: where the first rush lands

Opening week is the deepest-stock window of the NHL year: every team is undefeated, every size is available, and the banner-night ceremony is the single biggest jersey moment of the regular season. We tiered the opening slate and the dates that follow by how fast those shirts move.

TIER 1
Florida at Carolina (banner night) · Montreal at Toronto (McKenna watch) · Vancouver at Edmonton · Full-League Day, 13 October

The four events that move markets. A championship banner going up in Raleigh is the calendar’s biggest single jersey night; Toronto’s opener carries the No. 1 pick’s possible debut in hockey’s loudest market; McDavid in Edmonton is a permanent seller whatever the month; and 13 October is the first day every team plays.

TIER 2
Rangers at Bruins · Blackhawks at Golden Knights · Penguins at Flyers · Kings at Avalanche · Tkachuk’s return to Ottawa · Heritage Classic · Winter Classic · Stadium Series

Established national-window sellers and the outdoor games. Original Six matchups and outdoor classics are the two formats that reliably lift jersey demand beyond a team’s own fan base.

TIER 3
Global Series Finland · Global Series Germany · All-Star Weekend

Collector territory. European showcase games and the All-Star format mostly move commemorative pieces rather than everyday shirts — worth watching, rarely worth a rush.

Five storylines that decide what sells

Banner night in Raleigh. Carolina swept the first two rounds last spring, closed the Eastern Conference Final in five, and beat Vegas in six for the Cup — with Jordan Staal taking the Conn Smythe. Championship-era Hurricanes shirts are the single most requested NHL item in our order flow right now, and the ceremony is the demand trigger. Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho were the two names that moved fastest all summer.

Brady Tkachuk in red. The blockbuster trade that sent the former Senators captain to Florida to play alongside his brother Matthew makes opening night a family debut in the building where Brady built his reputation. He returns to Ottawa on 21 October, a date that will sell in two markets at once.

The McKenna watch in Toronto. Gavin McKenna went first overall in the 2026 draft, signed in July, and could make his NHL debut in an Original Six game at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto missed the playoffs last season and rebuilt around him, adding Sergei Bobrovsky in goal and a new head coach. If he plays, his jersey becomes the fastest-moving rookie name of the season overnight.

McDavid and Draisaitl, still the standard. Connor McDavid led the league with 138 points, Nathan MacKinnon scored 53 goals, and Nikita Kucherov finished second in scoring — the same three names that anchor our NHL order flow every year. Vancouver at Edmonton closes the opening night in the mountain time window.

New identities, new dates. The league added a European primetime concept this season: Monday matinees at 1:00 p.m. ET aimed at overseas audiences, starting with Florida at Buffalo on 12 October. Add the Global Series in Helsinki and Düsseldorf, three outdoor games — including Utah’s first, on New Year’s Eve against Colorado — and the All-Star format’s return in February, and the season has more merchandising moments than any in recent memory.
