The halfway picture
Three of six matches played, and the groups have already taken shape.
Group A1 — France lead, Türkiye are gone
France have seven points from three and are the only side in the group still unbeaten, having beaten Türkiye and Belgium before drawing 1-1 with Italy on Friday. Belgium are a point behind and have scored five. Italy sit third on four. Türkiye have lost all three and conceded eight, and their league phase is effectively over.
Group A2 — Greece lead a group where nobody is running away
Greece have seven points, including the win in Germany that remains the result of their campaign, and they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands on Thursday. The Netherlands are unbeaten but have drawn twice. Germany, on four points, won for the first time in this competition under their current coach by beating Serbia 2-0. Serbia have lost all three.
Group A3 — Spain perfect, England emphatic, Croatia in pieces
Spain have won all three, scored ten and conceded four, and they are the only side in the group with a perfect record. England responded to losing at Wembley by winning 2-0 in Prague and then 7-0 in Croatia — eleven goals scored, three conceded across three matches. Croatia have now lost twice, conceding eleven in the process, and their goal difference reads minus nine. Czechia have lost all three.
Group A4 — Portugal clear, three clubs tied on three points
Portugal have won all three, including a 4-2 win in Denmark on Thursday, and look the most settled side in the group. Behind them it is a scramble: Denmark, Norway and Wales all have three points, separated only by goal difference. Wales kept themselves alive by beating Norway 2-1.
Five things Matchday 3 told us
Croatia 0-7 England: the round in one scoreline
England had lost their opener at Wembley and were level with Croatia on three points before kick-off. They finished the night with eleven goals in the group phase, a plus-eight goal difference and Croatia’s worst night of the campaign behind them. It is the widest margin of any Matchday 3 match, and it caps a fortnight in which Croatia took a 4-1 defeat in Spain and then conceded seven at home.
Poland 6-0 Romania: the other outlier
The most one-sided game of Friday's ten was in Bucharest, where Poland scored six without reply. Coming after a 1-1 draw in Bosnia and a 3-1 home defeat to Sweden, it turns Group B4 from a two-horse race into something more open.
France 1-1 Italy: the group A1 result that keeps both alive
The biggest fixture of the round ended level, which suits France more than Italy: France stay unbeaten on seven points, Italy stay third on four and remain three points behind Belgium for the second qualifying place. Neither side lost, and neither side gained much.
Germany 2-0 Serbia: a first win, and only a small one
Germany had one point from two matches and had never beaten Greece, so a home win over Serbia was the minimum required. They got it, and moved to four points — still third in Group A2, still three behind the Netherlands and one behind nobody. The margin for error in a six-game group is thinner than it looks.
The Netherlands and Greece are the group that resists conclusions
A2 is the only League A group with two unbeaten teams: Greece on seven points and the Netherlands on five, who drew 2-2 with each other on Thursday. Greece have won twice and the Netherlands have won once, and both have conceded in every game but one. Whoever blinks first in November decides this group.

Shirt demand index: Matchday 3
Built from our own order flow and range depth after the three-day window closed.
Spain and Portugal. Both have won all three matches, both are the only sides in League A with nine points, and both have a fixture list that keeps them in front of a home crowd in November.
England and France. England responded to losing at Wembley with eleven goals in two games; France are unbeaten and top of their group. Neither of these ranges depends on a result to move.
Croatia and Germany. Croatia have conceded eleven goals in two matches and Germany are still third in their group — two sets of supporters whose stock is at its lowest, which is historically where the value sits for a November fixture.

Our verdict
Three matchdays in, League A has separated into four shapes: a runaway (Spain and Portugal, both perfect), a two-team fight (A1 and A2, where a single point separates first from second), a scramble (A4, where three clubs are tied), and a collapse (Croatia, who went from a win in Prague to conceding eleven goals in two games). The halfway read is that Spain look the best side in the competition and Croatia look the most fragile — and both of those conclusions come from a single fortnight.
