How the 36-team league phase works

This is the third season of the 36-team single-table format. Every club plays eight matches - four at home, four away - against eight different opponents, and the standings are one ladder rather than groups. The top eight go straight to the round of 16; clubs finishing 9th to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off; the bottom 12 are out of Europe entirely.

36 teams from 22 countries is the broadest the Europa League has ever been. England and France each send three clubs; Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Czechia and Poland each send two; Scotland, Turkey, Croatia, Israel, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Norway, Cyprus and Armenia each send one. The full fixture calendar is staggered across the first three matchdays to keep the European calendar readable.

The 36 teams in demand-tier order

Shirt demand does not spread evenly across 36 clubs in a competition like the Europa League. It clusters, and the cluster pattern is reliable. The tiers below reflect how quickly the participating shirts move once the league phase begins, based on our own order flow, not a prediction of results.

TIER 1
AC Milan · Juventus · Real Sociedad · Crystal Palace · Bournemouth · Sunderland

The European heavyweights and the Premier League first-nights. Milan and Juventus pull reliably on every European night, Real Sociedad rides the wider La Liga interest, and the three Premier League clubs are the loudest domestic story of the competition - a Sunderland European return and a first sustained Bournemouth campaign have not been seen at this level in a generation.

TIER 2
Benfica · Bayer Leverkusen · Marseille · Lyon · Celtic · Olympiacos · Celta Vigo

Big-club shirts that move on schedule all season. Benfica carries Champions League DNA into the Europa League; the German and French sides pull on Bundesliga / Ligue 1 baseline demand; Celtic and Olympiacos own their domestic league and travel in numbers wherever they go.

TIER 3
The remaining 20 clubs

Ferencvaros, Sparta Praha, Viktoria Plzen, GNK Dinamo Zagreb, Anderlecht, Union Saint-Gilloise, Sturm Graz, Red Bull Salzburg, Hoffenheim, Stade Rennais, AZ Alkmaar, N.E.C. Nijmegen, FC Twente, Lech Poznan, Jagiellonia Bialystok, Besiktas, Hapoel Beer-Sheva, Levski Sofia, OFI Crete, AC Omonia, NK Celje, Lillestrom, SCU Torreense, Ararat-Armenia. Most are first-time Europa League names for the modern fan, and the shirts are collector territory - small runs, distinctive crests, and the story of the round is often the away end.

How the 36 teams qualified

The qualification map is uneven by design. Eight places go to the top-five domestic leagues via the league phase drop-down: Premier League 5th and 6th, Serie A 5th and 6th, La Liga 6th, Ligue 1 5th. Ten places go to the champions path of the Champions League qualifiers, those who lose in the play-off round and the third qualifying round. Ten places go to the runners-up and third-place finishers from the top associations' domestic cups. The rest come from the Europa League play-off round and the Europa Conference League drop-down.

The practical effect is that the field includes two sets of clubs. The first set is the regular European operators - Milan, Juventus, Benfica, Real Sociedad, Bayer Leverkusen, Marseille, Lyon, Celtic, Olympiacos, Sturm Graz, Salzburg - clubs that have played in this competition or the Champions League in most of the last ten years. The second set is the fresh faces - Ararat-Armenia, OFI Crete, SCU Torreense, Lillestrom, NK Celje, N.E.C. Nijmegen, Union Saint-Gilloise - clubs whose European campaign is a one-off rather than an annual habit. Both groups matter: the first moves shirts by reputation, the second moves shirts by novelty.
