Ronaldo's 980th Goal: 20 From 1,000 and a Portugal Future Unresolved

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 980th career goal on Friday night, turning in a rebound 23 minutes into Al Nassr's 3-0 win over Al Diriyah in Riyadh — and leaving him 20 goals from becoming the first player to reach 1,000 in official matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo 980th goal
Ronaldo’s 23rd-minute goal against Al Diriyah was his 980th in senior football — 20 short of a thousand.

The 980th goal: quick answers

  • What happened? Ronaldo scored the 980th goal of his senior career on 9 October 2026, in Al Nassr’s 3-0 win over Al Diriyah in Riyadh.
  • How many to 1,000? Twenty.
  • What is the Al Nassr record now? Nineteen points from eight matches, level with the league leaders.
  • When does Al Nassr play next? At Al Ahli on 15 October.

Key takeaways

  • Ronaldo's 23rd-minute rebound against Al Diriyah was the 980th goal of his senior career, across Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Portugal and Al Nassr.
  • He is 20 goals from 1,000 in official matches. No player has ever reached it.
  • He has 146 goals in 234 caps for Portugal and 140 in the Champions League — both all-time men's records, and neither has moved.
  • The goal came nine days after he walked out of the Portugal camp and two days after he published a letter accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of an 'absolute breach of trust'.

980 career goals · 20 to 1,000

Across 1,337 senior appearances for Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Portugal and Al Nassr — a rate of 0.74 goals a game.

How the 980th goal arrived

It was not a signature goal, and it did not need to be. Al Nassr had already gone close; Kingsley Coman forced the goalkeeper into a save inside the penalty area and the ball stayed live. Ronaldo reacted first to the rebound and finished from close range after 23 minutes.

The rest of the night was comfortable. Ten minutes before half-time, João Félix put a corner on the penalty spot and Samú Costa powered in a header. With 13 minutes left, Coman broke through one-on-one and finished across the goalkeeper to make it three.

Two of those records are worth separating out. His 146 goals in 234 caps for Portugal is the men’s international record, and his 140 Champions League goals is the all-time record in that competition. Neither has moved during the chase for a thousand, which is why the milestone is a European and a Saudi story at the same time.

The last five goals

The gap between 976 and 980 took a little over three months, and only one of the five came in a Portugal shirt.

What 1,000 would actually take

Twenty goals. Al Nassr alone have fourteen fixtures left between now and the end of 2026, which is the arithmetic that has been quoted in Portugal this week: twenty goals in fourteen games is a rate of roughly 1.4 a match, against a career rate of 0.74.

That is the honest framing. He has scored four goals in seven league games this season, and he is 41. The 1,000-goal line is not a formality — it is a target that would require him to double his career scoring rate for three months.

And then there is Portugal

The goal came at the end of the most turbulent fortnight of his career, and the two stories are not really separable.

On 1 October he left the Portugal camp halfway through the four-game Nations League break, after staying an unused substitute against Norway. On 7 October he published a long open letter through Portuguese media accusing head coach Jorge Jesus — his former coach at Al Nassr — of an “absolute breach of trust”, saying he had been promised 30 minutes against Norway and then not used, and promised an apology that did not come. The letter apologised to supporters and team-mates, said he would accept a suspension, and stated plainly that he has not retired from international football.

On 9 October, the same day he scored in Riyadh, Portugal’s federation published a disciplinary statement covering several matters — and did not mention Ronaldo. So there is no sanction to report yet. Because he admitted the breach, the rules would halve any ban: a one-month suspension becomes 15 days.

That is the state of play. A player 20 goals from a milestone nobody has reached, scoring for his club, waiting on his federation.

Coman and João Félix. Coman's shot created the rebound, and Félix's corner created the second — two shirts from the same 90 minutes.

Our verdict

The 980th goal was the least interesting thing about the night, and that is the point: Ronaldo has spent twenty years making the ordinary finish look administrative. The number that matters is 20. Everything else — the walkout, the letter, the unannounced sanction — is noise around a count that has never been reached before. Al Nassr have fourteen games left in 2026. If he gets there, it will be in a Saudi shirt, not a Portugal one.
