Five games that decide September

No. 5 Texas at No. 20 Tennessee — the noon measuring stick

Neyland at noon is the loudest place in the sport, and it is the Volunteers’ one real chance to beat a ranked team before November. Texas has already been through a top-five road test this month, so the noise should not surprise them — the pass rush might. If the Longhorns survive this and October’s Red River game, they are the story of the first half of the season.

No. 2 Oregon at No. 14 USC — the Big Ten’s West Coast decider

The Coliseum, a Heisman conversation and a top-two ranking all in one night. Oregon’s quarterback came back for this kind of game; USC’s problem has never been talent, it has been the fourth quarter. Whichever defence holds up late wins the conference’s best non-conference-free weekend.

No. 10 Oklahoma at No. 3 Georgia — first trip to Athens as SEC rivals

Georgia in Athens is a different proposition: the Bulldogs have been close to unbeatable at home under their current staff, especially against top-10 visitors. Oklahoma’s route to a statement win is to run the ball and shorten the game. If the Sooners’ quarterback gets comfortable early, this becomes the game of the day.

No. 8 Texas A&M at No. 11 LSU — Tiger Stadium after dark

The most physical game on the board. LSU’s schedule has been brutal already and a 4-0 start here would set up a November run that decides their season. A&M have the talent to bully anyone in the conference; the question is whether they can do it for 60 minutes on the road.

Illinois at No. 6 Ohio State — the Illibuck returns to Columbus

Ohio State’s Big Ten opener, and the first Illibuck meeting at Ohio Stadium since 2017. The Buckeyes have won ten straight in the series; Illinois have been competitive in both games this season. This is the week the conference pecking order starts to look real.

What we think happens — and why

  • Tennessee keeps it close, Texas wins late. Neyland turns noon games into chaos, but Texas have already handled a top-five road environment this season. Our call: a one-score game decided in the fourth quarter.
  • Georgia covers at home. Athens against top-10 visitors has been a graveyard for a decade. Oklahoma’s best path is a low-possession game, and that is not how they are built.
  • Oregon-USC is the weekend’s best watch. Two offences that score quickly, one defence that has to survive the last eight minutes. Take the over.
  • LSU survives A&M in the fourth quarter. Tiger Stadium at night has decided more of these than either roster has.

Shirt demand index: how the Week 4 teams move

Built from our own order flow and range depth, not from a poll. The tiers move every Sunday after a win.

Tier 1
Tier 1 · sells in hours after a win

Texas, Georgia and Ohio State — national brands whose shirts move fastest every Sunday morning.

Tier 2
Tier 2 · conference pride

Tennessee, Oklahoma, Oregon, Michigan and Penn State — steady demand, strongest after a ranked win.

Tier 3
Tier 3 · the deep cuts

USC, LSU, Texas A&M — smaller football ranges on our shelves, but the ones that disappear first when a game goes to overtime.

Our verdict

September schedules flatter teams that start fast and punish teams that need time. The programs that survive this Saturday — and there will only be a few — will look like playoff teams by October. Everyone else will spend the rest of the autumn explaining a 12:00 kick-off. Watch the trenches, not the scoreboard: that is where this weekend is won.

When is college football Week 4 in 2026?
Week 4 runs from Thursday 24 September to Saturday 26 September 2026, with the main slate on Saturday 26 September.
What time does Texas at Tennessee kick off?
Noon ET on Saturday 26 September at Neyland Stadium, on ABC or ESPN with the network confirmed after the 19 September games.
Where is Oregon at USC being played?
At the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The kick-off time was still to be confirmed when this guide was published.
Is Oklahoma at Georgia a conference game?
Yes. It is the first meeting between the two as SEC opponents, at Sanford Stadium in Athens.
Why are so many 26 September kick-off times still TBA?
Conferences use the six-day option for TV selections. Those kick-off times and networks are finalised on Sunday 20 September, after the previous weekend’s games.
Which Week 4 teams are ranked?
The 14–16 September polls put Texas (5), Tennessee (20) and others in the top 25. Polls refresh every Sunday, so positions move before kick-off.
Are these games on TV in the UK and Europe?
Yes. The noon ET window is 5:00 p.m. BST and 6:00 p.m. CEST, which makes Saturdays in September unusually watchable from Europe.
