Twelve teams. One trophy. Thirty-three days of October baseball. The 2026 MLB postseason begins September 29, and the bracket is taking shape.
The regular season ends Sunday, September 27. Two days later, the Wild Card Series opens. By October 23, two teams will stand at the World Series starting line. And if a champion isn't crowned until the very end, Game 7 falls on Halloween night, October 31.
Here is the bracket as it stands in late August, the storylines shaping October, and the jerseys to wear when your team takes the field.
The bracket, explained
Twelve teams make the MLB playoffs: six from the American League, six from the National League. In each league, the three division winners are joined by three Wild Card teams. The two division winners with the best records earn a first-round bye straight to the Division Series.
The remaining four teams in each league play a best-of-three Wild Card Series: the No. 3 seed hosts the No. 6 seed, and the No. 4 seed hosts the No. 5 seed. All three games are at the higher seed's ballpark, so there is no travel. Lose two and you are done.

National League: three storylines that could define October
1. The Dodgers chase history
The Dodgers are going for three. Back-to-back World Series titles in 2024 and 2025 put them in rare company — the first repeat champions in a quarter century. A third in 2026 would make them only the third franchise in MLB history to three-peat, joining the Yankees and Athletics. At 79-51, they lead the NL West by eight games and are all but locked into a top-two seed and a first-round bye.

2. The Brewers own baseball's best record
Nobody saw this coming. Milwaukee sits at 81-49, the best record in baseball, and would be the No. 1 overall seed in the National League if the season ended today. Their ace, 23-year-old Jacob Misiorowski, owns a 1.62 ERA with 167 strikeouts, and he threw the fastest pitch by a starting pitcher in the pitch-tracking era at 103.7 mph. The Brewers have never won a World Series. This might be their best chance.
3. The Braves and Phillies are fighting for October
Atlanta leads the NL East at 75-55, but Philadelphia is on an eight-game winning streak and closing the gap. Both teams are playoff locks, but the division winner gets a No. 3 seed and a home Wild Card series, while the runner-up hits the road. The race matters — home-field advantage in a best-of-three series where all games are at one ballpark is enormous.
American League: chaos and clarity
1. The Rays are the AL's best team
Tampa Bay leads the American League at 76-53, three games ahead of the Yankees in the AL East. The Rays are built on pitching, defense, and depth — the formula that has made them a perennial contender despite one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. A top-two seed means a first-round bye and five days of rest before the Division Series.
2. The AL West is a mess
The Houston Astros lead the division at 65-65 — a .500 team in first place with five weeks to play. The Texas Rangers are one game back and also holding the final Wild Card spot. The Mariners, Tigers, Guardians, Twins, Orioles, and Blue Jays are all within striking distance of that last Wild Card berth. This race will go down to the final weekend.
3. Yankees-Red Sox: October's oldest rivalry
Both teams are playoff-bound: the Yankees at 73-56 and the Red Sox at 70-59. If the standings hold, they would meet in a best-of-three Wild Card series at Yankee Stadium. It would be the first postseason matchup between the rivals since the 2018 ALDS — and the first at the current Yankee Stadium.
The Ohtani factor
The biggest storyline of October might not be a team race at all. Shohei Ohtani has not pitched since July 3, sidelined by a left knee issue that required a lubricant injection. But on August 22, he threw a 30-pitch live batting practice session, facing rehabbing catcher Will Smith, and came out of it without issue.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani could return to the rotation during the team's September 1-9 homestand. He will build up one inning at a time, but the goal is clear: have Ohtani at full strength as both a hitter and a pitcher when October arrives. Through 14 starts this season, Ohtani is 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA and 95 strikeouts. At the plate, he has 30 home runs and a .294 average.
If Ohtani is healthy enough to start games in October — even as a multi-inning opener — the Dodgers' path to a three-peat gets significantly harder for any opponent to block.
